От 1984 г. до 1989 г. именно в Шумен се създават най-мощните артилерийски съединения в цялата ни военна история. Това е артилерийската дивизия в състав четири артилерийски бригади, една от които е реактивната бригада в състав от четири реактивни дивизиона с реактивни системи за залпов огън БМ-21 „Град“. Тук е създадена и единствената противотанкова артилерийска бригада в състав от пет дивизиона, въоръжени със 100-мм противотанково оръдие МТ-12.
