The ESSM can reach out to ~50km, but its effective range against high energy maneuvering target is likely to to 1/2 to 2/3 of that or roughly horizon range which is perfect for its mission.

Currently, it is not supersonic AShMs that are the biggest challenge it is stealthy AShMs. Missile's like the Kongsberg NSM (aka JSM) or the JSSM maritime are very stealthy, fly lower than supersonic ones and uses IIR homing. This means that sometimes you don't realize they are there until 5~10km out when you have even less reaction time than with with a supersonic missile. In addition, if you are using active or semi-active radar missile you have problems getting the missile to lock onto the target. Even if you are using an IIR missile like the RAM, these do not show up like a pile of hot coal which is what supersonic missiles do.
