WASHINGTON, March 12 (AFP) - US forces massed against Iraq
topped 250,000 this week, including 140,000 troops in Kuwait, as a
military buildup continued in the face of a diplomatic impasse over
whether to go to war, US defense officials said Wednesday.
Adding the 14,000 troops in Afghanistan and surrounding central
Asian countries the total number deployed rose to 270,000, an
official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The biggest concentration of US forces was in Kuwait where US
army and marine troops have been massing for week on Iraq's southern
border.
Another 47,500 sailors and marines were aboard warships in the
Gulf region, and 20,000 were deployed in the European theater, many
of them with two aircraft carrier battle groups in the eastern
Mediterranean.
There were 9,000 troops in Saudi Arabia, 8,000 in Qatar, 5,000
in Bahrain and 5,000 in Turkey, the officials said.

По принцип за приемане им трябва още един глас от другите седем държави, от които 5 са твърдо против, между които Франция и Русия заплашват, че могат да използват правото си на вето, други две държави - Мексико и Чили се колебаят...
