Russia to Destroy S-300 Weapons Systems Meant for Export to Syria
“The S-300 complexes meant for Syria will be destroyed. This decision has been made on the level of the country’s political leadership,” Konstantin Biryulin said.
Asked if the complexes could be sold to a different country, Biryulin said that it was possible, “but very unlikely.”
On Friday, S-300 manufacturer Almaz-Antey defense concern deputy chief Vyacheslav Dzirkaln said at the Oboronexpo-2014 exhibition that the decision to scrap the S-300s produced for Syria has not been made yet. “The system has been manufactured, and its future is unclear yet,” he said, adding that it could be offered to other foreign clients.
Dzirkaln said Biryulin’s words carried by a number of media on Monday were wrongly interpreted by journalists. “He [Biryulin] did not assert that the system will certainly be scrapped,” the deputy director said.
The decision has not been made yet. The system has been manufactured, its fate is undetermined,” Dzirkaln said, adding that the system might be offered to other foreign customers.
“He [Biryulin] did not confirm that the system will be definitely scrapped,” Dzirkaln said.
"If the equipment does not find an appropriate application, it will be disposed of."
Meanwhile, Iran continues its attempts to persuade Moscow to resurrect the S-300 deal that was cancelled after a UN arms embargo was imposed on the Islamic republic in 2010.
